Doubt is the Devil

A short song by Simon Oak about too much faith to the tune of The Mason’s Apron.

Lyrics

1. Some say that doubt is the Devil if you have to drive a car
Doubt is the Devil for the one behind the bar
Doubt is the Devil on the road to Mullingar
But isn’t doubt a sort of roundabout to take us everywhere?

2. If you believe that you know the way, denying that you’re lost
Cheat everyone to save your face at any cost
Preach, pray and nail the disbeliever to the cross
If you go round without a bit of doubt you need some special care

Chorus:
Some say “Allah”, others say “Jesus”
Some say “Religion is the root of all evil”
Too many say “My way is the only way”
I swear a decent bit of doubt could make us all agree

Some say “I know”, others say “It’s proven”
Some say “The Devil tries to make us stop believing”
Too many build castles and rock solid theories
Just add a decent bit of doubt to make good company

3. Some say that doubt is the Devil if you have to fly a plane
Doubt is the Devil for the driver of the train
Doubt is the Devil when you see a hurricane
But isn’t doubt a sort of stout that opens up a narrow mind?

4. If you don’t speak to a stranger just because you are afraid
Believe what you hear the nasty politicians say
Slander foreign people in a denigratory way
You may go out and learn to doubt yourself and never be unkind

Chorus
