Lord Saint Davids

Inspired by a news item in 2018, Simon Oak wrote this true-story-song about Rhodri Philipps, an arrogant English aristocrat, a racist, a convicted criminal, and a Leave-voter in David Cameron’s anti-EU Referendum that started off the UK’s highly damaging Brexit process. Philipps issued a £5,000 reward for the first person to ‘accidentally’ run over Gina Miller, after she had won a court case against the government over Brexit.

Lyrics

1. There once was a viscount in Pembroke
His great-grandfather’s sole heir
On life he had a strange outlook
He’d go after girls with dark hair

Chorus:
“I’m not .. Mister Saint Davids, I’m afraid.
It’s Lord Saint Davids.” he said
Before he stood up his case to be made
For putting a price on her head

2. This price it was Brexit related
He didn’t like her to fight for her right
Smart people of color he hated
Those “immigrants” should be quiet and polite

3. His mother was from Santiago
His father a Peer in the Lords
A lover of Rossini’s adagio
But he didn’t quite play the same chords

Chorus

4. He lost his family fortune
And borrowed from friends to pretend
His dealings grew out of proportion
His wife never knew what he’d spent

5. In Germany he swindled for millions
For to fly in his own private jet
He bought him an opera singer
And he slept 12 months in a prison bed

Chorus

6. Once free and back home in West Sussex
He defaulted again on his debts
So he ran into grave repercussions
Lost his villa and his polo caps

7. Now he’s bankrupt, abased and frustrated
A whole life lived beyond his means
An aristocrat filled with hatred
Just blaming blacks, Liberals and Greens

Chorus
